Song: “My Prerogative” by Bobby Brown
Reached #1: January 14, 1989 (his first, 1 week)
I suppose it’s fitting that Bobby Brown’s official website hasn’t been updated in 3 years – although he’s been a footnote in pop and R&B for over a decade.
It’s a shame, really. From New Edition to his early solo career, it seemed that Brown was someone we were going to hear from for a long, long time… unfortunately, by the early 90’s, he had met the two things that were going to derail him – Whitney Houston and drugs.
By the mid-90’s, he was off the radar.
By 2003, he was abusing Houston, drugs, and what was left of his celebrity.
I don’t need to tell you how Being Bobby Brown (2005) made him look.
The moral of the story is fairly obvious, right? The story is ongoing, though. Brown is one of the “Heads of State” with other New Edition alums… he’s engaged and has a child with his fiancee. I hope he’s clean. Maybe there’s more good music in there somewhere… or at least, some peace in his life.
Tomorrow, an American rock epic. See you then.
