Song: “Have You Ever?” by Brandy
Reached #1: January 16, 1999 (her first solo #1, 2 weeks)
Brandy Norwood has quietly compiled one of the most stealthily successful careers in entertainment – if you weren’t paying attention, and I wasn’t, she’s carved herself quite a niche.
From her start as an actress at 14, then to singing at 15, and a starring role on UPN’s Moesha at 16… she’s been quite busy over the last 15 years or so.
She’s done movies (including serving as executive producer when she was 18), television (yes, she was executive producer of Moesha), and sang (4 hit albums).
She’s produced reality shows (OK, it was to help her brother’s career, who wouldn’t?) and a musical competition show that isn’t vicious or mean (The Hub’s Majors and Minors, where – get this – nobody got voted off!).
I didn’t know all that. Either I wasn’t paying attention, or she’s done a great job staying under the radar, or both. Really, if it weren’t for that auto accident in 2006, she’d have one of the most boringly normal careers ever. If I hadn’t done this blog, I still wouldn’t know any of this. The more you know… 🙂
Tomorrow, an artist who covered a song called “Brandy” (but changed the name), whose featured #1 hit has perhaps the most ironic title ever.
