Song: “Creep” by TLC
Reached #1: January 28, 1995 (their first, 4 weeks)
It’s been a decade since Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes died in a car crash in Central America.
It’s been two decades (almost) since she burned down Andre Rison’s mansion.
And I don’t know that there’s been a “girl group” like TLC since Left-Eye died, and yes, I know about Destiny’s Child.
I guess it’s because TLC never seemed like a star vehicle for one member of the group – it was a true trio – even though Lopes did try to get a solo career going. It seemed more like a way to promote the trio than a real attempt to break off.
That sense was underscored after Lopes’ death as Tionne Watkins and Rozonda Thomas retired the group instead of finding a new third singer. And even though they finally started performing under the TLC name again last year, they’re still a duo.
“Waterfalls” is the one everyone remembers, but I kind of like this one about a woman who gets back at her cheating man by cheating on him. What’s good for the gander is good for the goose (that *is* how the saying goes right?)…
Apparently, though, Lopes didn’t like the song, and didn’t want it released as a single. I think that’s something we’ll hear again and again – there are plenty of #1’s that the artists weren’t all that fond of…
Tomorrow, a disco-era classic.
