Song: “Africa” by Toto
Reached #1: February 5, 1983 (their first, 1 week)
No artifice, no snark, no kidding around – this has been one of my favorite songs for 30 years, and there was no way I was missing the chance to feature it on the blog.
Toto’s Jeff Porcaro says this is a song about a guy trying to write a song about Africa without ever having been there.
It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you.
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do.
Doesn’t everyone wish there was someone in their lives that you could say that to and actually mean it?
In researching for today’s blog, I came across a lengthy over-thinking of the song (damn, there’s that snark again) – so if you want someone else’s retelling of “Africa”, there you are.
As for me… I’m just going to play the video again.
See you tomorrow, for a different song of love and loss from a different era… it’ll be righteous.
Other songs to reach #1 on February 5:
1955 – “Hearts of Stone” by the Fontane Sisters (their first, 4 weeks, Best Seller chart)
1966 – “My Love” by Petula Clark (her second, 2 weeks)
1977 – “Torn Between Two Lovers” by Mary McGregor (her first, 2 weeks)
