Day 39: I’m Too Sexy

Song: “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred
Reached #1: February 8, 1992 (their first, 3 weeks)

Told you so…

I warned you (at the end of yesterday’s post)… you can already hear the song playing in your head, and you haven’t even hit “play” yet, have you?

In 1992, Right Said Fred spent 3 weeks on top of the Billboard chart with this earworm.  In 2010, AOL Radio called it the 8th worst song of the 20th Century.  I think reality is somewhere between those two extremes.

Here in the States, we know RSF as a one-hit wonder – they did this song, irritated us with it, and seemed to disappear.  In the UK, though, they actually scored four top five singles – but this wasn’t even their highest-ranked UK song.  Something called “Deeply Dippy”, which didn’t even chart here, hit #1 there.

Since “I’m Too Sexy”, RSF (now a duo – the two bald brothers, Richard and Fred Fairbrass – as the third member quit the group a few years after their big success) have been touring Europe and Japan, still riding the success of the album Up, released in 1991.  They have released seven albums since then, all of which have failed to sell many copies… I guess there is a market for a one-hit/one-album wonder, but it’s not in record stores (do those exist any more?).  And, of course, they’re still pulling in royalties from “I’m Too Sexy”, so I suppose they’re doing OK.

The name of the group came from a 1962 song by a British actor you haven’t heard of unless you’re a Doctor Who fan (Bernard Cribbins).  I can’t find any information on why they chose the name, but since one of the band members is named Fred, I think we can do the math.

The song is still playing in your head, isn’t it?

Fear not, I’ve got an instrumental #1 lined up tomorrow that will sweep it out…

Other songs that reached #1 on February 8:
1960 –
“Teen Angel” by Mark Dinning (his first, 2 weeks)
1975 – “Fire” by the Ohio Players (their first, 1 week)
2003 – “All I Have” by Jennifer Lopez feat. LL Cool J (Lopez’ fourth, 4 weeks)
