Song: “Father Figure” by George Michael
Reached #1: February 27, 1988 (his second solo #1, 2 weeks)
In the three years after “Careless Whisper”, a lot changed for George Michael. Wham! had broken up, Andrew Ridgeley had disappeared from the music scene, and Columbia Records realized that Michael was a star.
His devoted fans know this, of course, but Michael comes from a Greek background – his dad was a restaurant owner. I think we can be glad he Anglicized his name from Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou. Try pronouncing THAT on American radio.
Michael and Ridgeley were friends from their early-teen years, which is kind of a cautionary tale for anyone who forms a band with their friends – in many cases, someone’s going to be a breakout star, and someone else is going to be left behind when it happens. But Ridgeley turned out OK – he’s happily retired from music and living with Bananarama’s Keren Woodward, so I guess he got himself a pretty good consolation prize…
Tomorrow, a crossover country hit that might come to mind anytime the weather gets a bit wet…
