Day 67: A Day Without A #1…

This is the third day of the project on which there isn’t a #1 song… so here’s a look at another of yesterday’s #1s.

Song: “A Whole New World” by Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle
Reached #1: March 6, 1993 (their first, 1 week)

Disney for the win…

Yes, it’s a “Disney” song.

It’s also the song that ended Whitney Houston’s 14-week run at #1 (“I Will Always Love You”), and it’s an Academy Award winner.

It’s also a song you’ll hear endlessly around Disneyland or Walt Disney World… which I can testify to as a regular visitor to the Florida outpost of the Happiest Place On Earth.   Now I don’t think you actually hear the soundtrack version, but a Disney Movie Version… but still, it’s a song that has come to represent Disney in a way most of their theme songs haven’t.

For Bryson and Belle, this was by far their biggest pop hit… Bryson only got as far as #9 with his previous Disney Duet (“Beauty And The Beast” with Céline Dion) and had never even hit the top 10 with any other single.   Belle has never placed another single on Billboard’s pop Top 40.  To be fair, they’ve both hit #1 on the R&B charts multiple times.

Tomorrow, the first #1 for a rapper who went from 9 gunshot wounds on the streets of Jamaica, Queens to a mansion in Connecticut.

No songs reached #1 on March 7.
