Song: “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley
Reached #1: March 12, 1988 (his first, 2 weeks)
The thing is, this may be the only non-rickroll use of the video for “Never Gonna Give You Up” this year.
If you don’t know what rickrolling is, welcome back to Planet Earth, and I hope your time away was enjoyable.
It seems like the meme has been around forever, but the first rickroll (at 4chan) was less than 5 years ago, in May 2007.
The little-known sidebar to the rickroll meme is that it basically revived Astley’s career. He had retired from music in the early ‘90s to help raise his daughter – and had tried a comeback in 2004, which didn’t get too far due to quality problems with the comeback album. In 2008, a post-rickroll Greatest Hits album hit the UK Top 20 album charts with almost no promotion… and has gone back on tour with a couple of ‘80s-nostalgia bills in the last few years. He’s also got a side project as drummer for a three-man band called The Luddites.
Tomorrow, a singer who’s reinvented herself more times than just about anyone – which may be why she’s had an almost 50-year career in pop music.
