Song: “Believe” by Cher
Reached #1: March 13, 1999 (her fourth, 4 weeks)
I think we can forgive Cher for the obvious Autotune – because this is one of the rare cases where Autotune makes the song better… in fact, this is the song credited with giving Autotune mainstream credibility. The producer did the Autotuning for fun – and was surprised to find that Cher liked it. She liked it so much that she stood down her record company when they ordered the Autotune removed.
Cher’s been in the music business for almost 50 years – starting as a session singer in 1963, a solo act in 1964, and her partnership with Sonny Bono in 1965. She’s always been able to reinvent herself as needed… TV in the ‘70s, movies in the ‘80s, pushing the edge with the infamous “If I Could Turn Back Time” video in 1989, the Believe dance-music album after Sonny’s death in 1998, the first Farewell Tour in 2005, supporting her daughter-turned-son Chaz in the late ‘00s, and back on the road in 2012 (I don’t think she’s calling it her second Farewell Tour, but why not?).
There’s a joke in Hollywood that says “if there’s a nuclear holocaust, all that’d survive would be cockroaches and Cher”. Would you put it past her?
Tomorrow, we’ll get fresh… with a 1998 hit from a singer/actor who went on to far bigger things…
