Day 74: Gettin’ Jiggy With It

Song: “Gettin’ Jiggy With It” by Will Smith
Reached #1: March 14, 1998 (his first, 3 weeks)

Have you ever been jiggy?

Does it seem so long ago that Will Smith wasn’t necessarily a Serious Actor?

I mean, he’s Hollywood Royalty now, but there was a time when he was The Fresh Prince, a rapper from Philadelphia.  Then he landed The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and started to become an Actor.  Once that was over, he got the role in Independence Day that began to turn him into a Serious Actor.

What I find interesting is that this bit of light entertainment (and I’m not knocking light entertainment at all) came out two years after Independence Day made Will Smith a star.

Not even 15 years later, can you imagine that the management of an artist who was trying to become a Serious Actor would advise him to do a song like this?  How times have changed…

Smith does have an album coming out later this year or in 2013, his first since 2005.  It’ll be interesting, and informative, to see what kind of music he does…

Tomorrow, a pioneering California band who just lost one of their original members to cancer.

“Jacob’s Ladder” by Huey Lewis & the News (their third, 1 week)
