Day 82: My Eyes Adored You

Song: “My Eyes Adored You” by Frankie Valli
Reached #1: March 22, 1975 (his first solo, 1 week)

Yes, a video of a record spinning…

Before Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, a singer was either the front man for a band, or he was a solo artist.  You didn’t do both at the same time, as record labels feared that going solo would cannibalize sales by your group.  It was Valli’s Four Seasons bandmate Bob Gaudio who pushed Valli to go solo, writing many of his early singles, including his first one about eyes, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You”.

Gaudio’s songwriting partner Bob Crewe wrote “My Eyes Adored You” as a Four Seasons single – but the Four Seasons’ record label didn’t want to release it.  Valli bought it back from the label.  After several attempts, he found a label willing to release it, but only as a solo effort for Valli.  Since it hit #1, you’d have to assume it worked out well…

Since 1975, this song has retroactively been adopted by the Four Seasons, appearing on their hits compilations.  The song did generate some renewed interest in the Four Seasons, who were back on the charts themselves by the end of 1975.

Tomorrow, our first official return visit of the project, and it’s a Canadian singer I’m so fond of…

Other songs that reached #1 on March 22:
1980 –
“Another Brick In The Wall (Part II)” by Pink Floyd (their first, 4 weeks)
1986 – “These Dreams” by Heart (their first, 1 week)
1997 – “Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down” by Puff Daddy feat. Mase (his first, 6 weeks)
