Day 109: Boom Boom Pow

Song: “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas
Reached #1: April 18, 2009 (their first, 12 weeks)

Boom Boom Wow

When the Black Eyed Peas released The E.N.D. in 2009, they hadn’t yet had a #1 single in the US.  Kind of surprising given that they’d released songs like “Let’s Get It Started” (a revised version of album track “Let’s Get Retarded” – really), “Where Is The Love?”, and “Don’t Phunk With My Heart”.

So you had to figure they were due, at some point, to reach #1.  But… you couldn’t figure on this.

Between “Boom Boom Pow” and the follow-up, “I Gotta Feeling”, the Black Eyed Peas would wind up spending a ridiculous half-year at #1.  “Boom Boom Pow” spent 12 weeks at #1, immediately followed by “I Gotta Feeling” for 14 more.

No other act ever had that many consecutive weeks at #1 with multiple singles.  It wasn’t even close… the most I could find was Usher with 19 weeks.

Of course, this begs the question… if Nicole Scherzinger had been available when the Peas were looking for a lead singer, would they have been successful?  She had to turn them down as she was still obligated to Eden’s Crush… so the Peas went to their second choice, a former member of Disney’s Kids Incorporated.  Yes, that’d be Fergie.

Tomorrow, one of Minneapolis’ favorite sons, by any name.

Other songs that reached #1 on April 18:
1987 –
“I Knew You Were Waiting For Me” by Aretha Franklin & George Michael (Aretha’s second, 2 weeks)
