Song: “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” by B.J. Thomas
Reached #1: April 26, 1975 (his second, 1 week)
B.J. Thomas liked long titles – he released several singles over the years with the (parenthetical) subtitle, for example – but this was ridiculous. I’m sure DJ’s kidded that the song was half over by the time they finished saying the title… but it didn’t stop this from becoming Thomas’ second #1 single.
You might be surprised to learn that his first wasn’t “Hooked On A Feeling” – while we’ve seen Blue Swede’s cover reach #1, the original only got to #5. No, it was a song appropriate for the moment I’m writing this blog, the Bacharach/David single for the Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid soundtrack “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”, that went to #1 in 1969.
After “Somebody”…”, Thomas’ pop career wound down pretty quickly – but he found success as a gospel singer, and as a commercial jingle writer/singer, as well as by going back to his country roots. He did resurface as a pop singer in 1988, doing the Growing Pains theme song (first with Jennifer Warnes, then as a single with Dusty Springfield).
And to show that no career ever truly ends, he was the halftime entertainment at the 2011 Sun Bowl. He’ll turn 70 in August 2012… and shows no signs of slowing down.
Where Thomas went from pop to gospel, tomorrow we’ll meet a singer who went in the other direction.
No other songs reached #1 on April 26.
