Song: “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin
Reached #1: May 8, 1999 (his first, 5 weeks)
I usually start my day with ESPN’s “Mike & Mike In The Morning”… which I mention because today, as a payoff to their annual bet on the NCAA Basketball Tournament brackets, Mike Greenberg is dancing to “Livin’ La Vida Loca” on the show. It’s, obviously, a bit of Disney synergy, given that Dancing With The Stars is one of ABC’s cash cows…
…and I’m sure they had no idea that “Livin’ La Vida Loca” hit #1 13 years ago today.
We couldn’t get away from this song in 1999 if we tried… it was everywhere. That opening horn riff got into your head (and wouldn’t leave). And you can imagine the number of women swooning over Martin.
Too bad he wasn’t going to be reciprocating. Now really, it’s not relevant who anyone sleeps with, but there’s something to be said for being honest about who you are. For almost 15 years, Martin had a “relationship” with a Mexican TV personality (Rebecca de Alba) while denying what was fairly obvious all along. We’ll never know if he was denying it to himself, too… but considering that he came out in 2010, got Spanish citizenship in 2011 to expedite the process of marrying his partner, and did so in 2012… ‘nuff said.
Tomorrow, a soundtrack hit for an artist who really didn’t need to prove anything by scoring a #1 pop hit.
Other songs that reached #1 on May 8:
1976 – “Welcome Back” by John Sebastian (his first, 1 week)
1982 – “Chariots of Fire – Titles” by Vangelis (his first, 1 week)
