Song: “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” by Stevie Wonder
Reached #1: May 19, 1973 (his third, 1 week)
Previously: Day 27
1973 was a mixed bag of a year for Stevie Wonder.
He did have his second and third #1 hits (“Superstition” and “Sunshine”), and successfully toured as the opening act for The Rolling Stones. He took on that tour to reach a new audience beyond the Motown fanbase he already had – clearly, it worked.
He also released the iconic Innervisions album, featuring two top ten hits (“Higher Ground”, “Living For The City”).
Unfortunately, in August, he was involved in an accident in North Carolina – while on tour, the car he was riding was hit by a truck. The accident left him in a coma for a few days, and sidelined him for seven months. When he came back, he had two new Grammys in hand, for “Sunshine” and Innervisions.
But even the accident didn’t really slow him down. Fullfillingness’ First Finale and the defining Songs In The Key Of Life followed over the next three years. And he was just getting started…
Tomorrow, we search for a little luck…
