Day 146: Everything She Wants

Song: “Everything She Wants (Remix)” by Wham!
Reached #1: May 25, 1985 (their third, 2 weeks)
Previously: Day 47

Somebody tell me… won’t you tell me…?

When we last saw Wham!, they were “releasing” a single that wasn’t a Wham! single – it was the George Michael solo track “Careless Whisper”.

“Everything She Wants” came out as a double-A-sided single with “Last Christmas” in much of the world – however, when the song was released in the US, it was late May, so “Everything” was a more traditional single here.

It was, in several ways, the high point of the short existence of Wham! as a duo.  It’s one of the only Wham! songs that George Michael still sings in concert.  It was the third and last US #1 hit they had.  And after this song, only two more Wham! singles hit the Top 40, both from an album logically titled “The Final” in the UK – but “Music From The Edge of Heaven” in the US, by the same record label that didn’t think the audience was smart enough to handle Michael’s solo track.

I’m going to head off on a tangent here.  If you want a good laugh, check out the Wikipedia page for Wham!  Someone, seeking to prove a point (I guess), has littered the page with the infamous “[Citation Needed]” tag, to the extent that the page is almost unreadable.  Really, it’s worth a moment, just to see what some people will do in the service of their personal demons…

While Michael has had the spotlight, Ridgeley left music after a failed 1990 solo album, and has spent most of his time working for environmental causes (and enjoying his long-term non-marriage to Keren Woodward of Bananarama).

Tomorrow, we go back 50 years to one of the last non-“pop” singles to hit #1.

Other songs that reached #1 on May 25:
1991 –
“I Don’t Wanna Cry” by Mariah Carey (her fourth, 2 weeks)
