Day 148: Oh Girl

Song: “Oh Girl” by the Chi-Lites
Reached #1: May 27, 1972 (their first, 1 week)

Oh…

The Chi-Lites’ two big hits came in the early ‘70s – “Oh Girl” and “Have You Seen Her” – but you’d never know that by just listening to the songs.

When you first heard the Chi-Lites, you figured the songs came out at the height of the Motown era, right?  ‘67 or ‘68?  By 1972, their sound was already a throwback in some ways…

Of course, that’s because the Chi-Lites took 15 years to reach their overnight success.  They’d been together since the late ‘50s… originally as the Hi-Lites before they decided to include the Windy City in the group name.

As with a lot of vocal groups, success led to the group splintering, then completely breaking up by 1977.  They reformed in 1980, and continue to tour to this day, although auto accidents and aging have changed the lineup several times since then.

You know what?  I’m going to stop typing… just press play.

Tomorrow… oh, what a feeling.

No other songs reached #1 on May 27.
