Day 213: Genie In A Bottle

Song: “Genie In A Bottle” by Christina Aguilera
Reached #1: July 31, 1999 (her first, 5 weeks)
Previously: Day 13

Who’d turn down this bottle?

In the 200 days since we last saw Xtina on the blog, she survived the second season of The Voice, and started taping the third.  She’s also back in the studio, recording a new album due for release this year, with the first single coming “any day now”.

It certainly has been the quiet year she probably needed.  She got divorced in 2010, and her 2011 included a messily public DUI, The Voice’s first season, the movie Burlesque, the botched “Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, and “Moves Like Jagger”.

I guess she was entitled to a little down time…

Her second Voice season was… interesting.  She caught heat for some of her outfits, and her occasional attempts to upstage her singers.  But the low point of her season was her complete failure to recognize one of her former Mickey Mouse Club co-stars, Tony Lucca, when he auditioned for The Voice – as well as her apparent efforts to undermine him with her criticism at times.   The Voice producers clearly think she’s good for ratings, though, as she tends to be featured in advertising and often gets a little more time to ramble through her critiques.  It’ll be interesting to see how the show does without her – and the rest of the original judging panel – for season four next spring.  To allow the current judges to have their careers, The Voice is planning to use a different panel for the second of the two back-to-back seasons in 2012-13.

But whatever she does… I’d say it’s a safe bet that we’ll be watching.

Tomorrow, we move into August with one of the first rocker/soap-actors…

Other songs that reached #1 on July 31:
1971 –
“You’ve Got A Friend” by James Taylor (his first, 1 week)
2010 – “Love The Way You Lie” by Eminem feat. Rihanna (his fourth, 7 weeks)
