Song: “Macarena” by Los del Rio
Reached #1: August 3, 1996 (their first, 14 weeks)
What can I say? 14 weeks at #1 for a novelty track that has become both a jock jam and a somewhat-reviled one-hit wonder.
Here in Richmond, the Macarena brings back memories of a heavyset hockey fan. For years at Richmond hockey games (through all of the franchises that played here), at some point during the game, the sound guy would fire up “Macarena”. That would be the cue for the spotlights to hit this one gentlemen who did a Fat Guy Macarena that you had to see to believe. Of course, it always ended with his replica jersey over his head and his “it must be jelly ‘cause jam don’t shake like that” gut vibrating to the roar of the crowd. I guess it must’ve been memorable – we haven’t had hockey in Richmond in several years…
For Los Del Rio, the Macarena continues to pay off, with royalties pouring in more than 15 years later. It’s also taken its share of abuse, getting ranked on the AOL Worst Songs Ever and the VH1 Awesomely Bad #1 Songs list.
“Macarena” has the distinction of being one of the most successful Billboard #1 songs not to hit #1 in the UK. Before you congratulate British audiences for their discretion, the reason “Macarena” stalled at #2 was… “Wannabe” from the Spice Girls. How’s that for a musical no-win situation?
Los del Rio broke up in 2007, although they occasionally get together for charity events.
