Day 219: Stay

Song: “Stay (I Missed You)” by Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories
Reached #1: August 6, 1994 (her first, 3 weeks)

Reality Bites?

There’s an arc to most music careers – start out in your friend’s garage, then work your way up to local bars… maybe a regional tour or two… send out CDs and hope that an A&R guy likes your music… get signed to a label… make an album or two… get dropped by the label… sign to a new one…

…or you could do what Lisa Loeb did.  Befriend an actor (Ethan Hawke) who needs a track for a film his friend (Ben Stiller) is producing (Reality Bites).  Stiller used the song, radio started playing it, and Loeb suddenly found herself with a #1 single.

And she wasn’t even signed to a record label yet.

She did sign to Geffen Records in 1995 and released Tails.   It did… OK.

The reality is that nothing Loeb has released has done as well as “Stay” in the pop world… and the reality is also that it’s apparent Loeb doesn’t really worry about that.  In the last few years, she’s moved more toward acting, voice work, and producing children’s music (perhaps having two kids herself over the last three years has something to do with that).

Tomorrow, the guy who did a song about a tennis team hits #1 again…

No other songs reached #1 on August 6.
