Song: “You Are Not Alone” by Michael Jackson
Reached #1: September 2, 1995 (his twelfth, 1 week)
Previously: Day 65
By 1995, there weren’t many “firsts” left on the Billboard Hot 100. But changes in chart-compilation methodology did leave one possibility – a song that became popular quickly and overwhelmingly might just debut at #1.
“You Are Not Alone” was that song.
It was the second single from HIStory – and thus the second single after the claims of what went on at Neverland came out. So yes, you kind of have to think twice about the title of the song… until you realize that R.Kelly wrote it for Jackson, and clearly he wasn’t thinking about any implications. He just wanted to write a song for his idol – and a classic love song seemed the best way to go. Sadly, a Belgian court said Kelly plagiarized it from two local songwriters – but no other court in the world agreed, so outside Belgium, it’s an R.Kelly song still.
To date, it’s also Jackson’s last #1 song.
The video could have been a lot more memorable had the original plans for Jackson to appear fully nude been followed through… but the record label got skittish and had the video digitally corrected.
Since Jackson premiered at #1, twenty more songs have debuted at the top of the charts, including the song that would shatter records for longevity at the top – that song would make its #1 debut three months after “You Are Not Alone”.
Tomorrow, an eccentric British duo hit #1…
