Song: “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin
Reached #1: September 13, 1986 (their first, 1 week)
Earlier this week, we saw a soundtrack #1 from the first big Simpson/Bruckheimer extravaganza, Flashdance. Three years later, they took a not-yet-crazy-Scientologist Tom Cruise, a lot of pop music, and a coming-of-age military story… and turned those ingredients into Top Gun.
For Berlin, doing the soundtrack single was a chance to show their talents off to the world. They’d had some middling success with “The Metro” and “No More Words”, but never had that one big hit. So when Georgio Moroder came to them with “Take My Breath Away”, they jumped at the chance…
…and promptly regretted it. While Terri Nunn embraced the opportunity, the rest of the band wasn’t thrilled that their biggest hit was written by someone else. Shortly after accepting the Oscar for Best Original Soundtrack Song, the band broke up over the dispute.
Terri Nunn won a court battle for the rights to the “Berlin” name, and put a new band together in 1998. That group toured for a while, before the original band got back together in 2004 for VH1’s Bands Reunited. After a 2011 tour, they’re in the studio working on what would be their first album together in 25 years.
Tomorrow… the greatest guitarist ever. In my opinion, at least.
