Song: “Release Me” by Wilson Phillips
Reached #1: September 15, 1990 (their second, 2 weeks)
They’re the daughters of pop royalty – Carnie and Wendy Wilson are daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, and Chynna Phillips’ parents are John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas. So was it any surprise that the girls wound up singing together?
Or, for that matter, was it a surprise that three of their first four singles hit #1 on the pop charts? Within two years after their debut album’s release, it was the best-selling album ever by an all-female group.
And a year after that, they’d split up.
Chynna decided she wanted to try a solo career – and left the group. The Wilson sisters did projects together during the decade the trio was apart, while Phillips did one solo album that didn’t quite work out. Phillips also married a Baldwin during the group’s break.
In 2004, they got back together to record the first of two cover albums, and they’ve also done a Christmas album since getting back together.
You have to wonder just how big Wilson Phillips would have been if Chynna had stayed with the Wilsons in 1993…
Tomorrow, another band with three lead voices (but rarely at the same time)…
