Day 271: So What

Song: “So What” by Pink
Reached #1: September 27, 2008 (her first, 1 week)

Alecia Moore first took the name “P!nk” as a club singer in Philadelphia – I’m sure there’s a story behind that, but I can’t find it…

…she first got noticed as a part of the girl group Choice.  They chose to break up soon after contributing a song to Shaquille O’Neal’s disaster Kazaam, which put Pink on the road to a solo career.

In 2001, she was the least-known (at the time) singer in the Moulin Rouge single “Lady Marmalade” (10 years on, that’s changed).  Coming off that shared #1, she decided it was time to take more control of her own career, and started working with former 4 Non Blondes singer Linda Perry on songs for her next album.  “Get The Party Started” was the first result of that collaboration.

The relationship that led to “So What” wasn’t the professional one, but the personal one with motocross racer Corey Hart (no sunglasses jokes, please).  They met in 2001, broke up and got back together in 2003, got engaged in 2005 (when Pink used a pit board to propose), married in 2006, split in 2008… the point at which Pink started working on the song… got back together in 2009… which meant they were back together when Pink was singing this song every night on tour (she says he finds it funny)… and had their first child in 2011.

There’s so much material there that there have to be more hits in the pipeline.  Her current (at this time) single, “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”, might be one of them… it’ll be the centerpiece of her The Truth About Love (hmmm…) tour in early 2013.

Tomorrow, the 7-minute single that shook up what radio thought could be a hit…

Other songs that reached #1 on September 27:
1975 –
“I’m Sorry/Calypso” by John Denver (his fourth, 1 week)
