Day 273: Love And Affection

Song: “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love And Affection” by Nelson
Reached #1: September 29, 1990 (their first, 1 week)

Second-generation rock…

I suppose if your grandparents were Ozzie and Harriet, and your dad was Rick Nelson… well, you have to wind up in entertainment somewhere.  Tracy Nelson, of course, went into acting.  As for her twin brothers…

Gunnar and Matthew Nelson first showed up in the music business about a year after Rick Nelson died in a plane crash.  As “The Nelsons”, they were a fairly traditional band, with Matthew fronting and Gunnar playing drums.  They even booked an SNL gig (rare for an unsigned band).  It was on the ride home from that gig when Gunnar realized something along the lines of “hey, we’re twins, why not take advantage of it?” Within a year, Gunnar had learned the guitar and was up-front with Matthew in Nelson.

It was a demo of this song that got Nelson signed to Geffen Records – which turned out to be the best and worst decision of their careers.  Best, because it led to this song reaching #1 on the charts.  Worst, because after their debut album (After The Fire), Geffen completely mishandled them, forced them to do an album that wasn’t their own vision, and finally dropped them after releasing that album.

Since 1995, Nelson have recorded for their own label (Stone Canyon Records), toured, and done tribute shows for their father as “Ricky Nelson Remembered”.

Tomorrow… a rock band that celebrated their success by ditching rock for country…
