Song: “The First Night” by Monica
Reached #1: October 3, 1998 (her first solo #1, 5 weeks)
Monica’s duet with Brandy, “The Boy Is Mine”, kind of messes up the count for both of their #1 hits – each has one solo #1 along with the duet… so is “The First Night” Monica’s first or second #1?
The source I use for this blog wimps out by calling “Brandy & Monica” a group and giving them one #1 hit, and counting the solo hits as the first for each. But since both singers reached #1 as a solo on the heels of the duet… ‘tis a tough call.
Monica did score one more #1, the followup to “The First Night” called “Angel of Mine”, so she winds up with 2… or 3… or 2 1/2… #1 songs.
While Monica has fallen off the pop charts, she’s a regular presence on the R&B charts, with her last R&B #1 coming in 2010 (“Everything To Me”).
Brandy and Monica tried to recreate the magic with a 2012 duet, “It All Belongs To Me”, but the song fizzled on the charts. That may have been because some of their promotional efforts were sidetracked by Whitney Houston’s death – they were supposed to perform the song at the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party. That was the party that was cancelled in the wake of Houston’s death that weekend.
Tomorrow, another solo R&B singer – although her first three #1 singles all featured different male duet partners…
No other songs reached #1 on October 3.
