Did you know that Stevie Wonder only had one solo #1 hit in the UK? For some reason, his work never resonated over there as well as it did here, and it took this 1984 soundtrack hit to get him to the top of the British charts.
The song came from Wonder’s soundtrack for Gene Wilder’s The Woman In Red, and earned Wonder an Oscar for Best Original Song.
That Oscar stands alongside 22 Grammy Awards and a very long list of honors and inductions that Wonder has earned in 50 years of music.
Wonder has been a big supporter of the singing competition shows, especially American Idol, where he’s made multiple appearances. I wonder, though… how would the teenaged Wonder have fared in an Idol-style competition? A blind kid from Michigan with such an incredible voice? Probably would have gotten through to the finals, but would’ve been voted off a few weeks from the end in favor of another White Guy With Guitar™.
Tomorrow, two white guys. With guitars.
Other songs that reached #1 on October 13:
1979 – “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson (his second, 1 week)
1990 – “Praying For Time” by George Michael (his fifth, 1 week)
