Bust(er)ed…

For a while in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Phil Collins dabbled at acting while doing a lot of soundtrack work.

For the most part, it was cameos and voiceover work – but his first stab at acting was to star in the 1988 film Buster, as well as doing half of the soundtrack.

Since the film was set in the ‘60s, so was the soundtrack – but the version of “A Groovy Kind Of Love” that Collins contributed to the soundtrack was nothing like the original.

The original, a #2 hit, was the first for the Mindbenders after Wayne Fontana left the group – and it was a more up-tempo rock hit.  Collins turned it into a ballad – and went one step higher on the charts than the Mindbenders did.

Although Collins’ role in Buster was considered to be “better than expected”, he still made the obvious – and, to most, correct – decision to stay with music.  As noted the first time we saw a Collins song here, he’s retired now due to a variety of health issues.

Tomorrow, the rock collaboration that reshaped the career of a legendary guitarist.

No other songs reached #1 on October 22.
