Day 297: Smooth

Song: “Smooth” by Santana featuring Rob Thomas
Reached #1: October 23, 1999 (his first, 12 weeks)
Previously: Day 99

A perfect title for a Santana song…

This song has the distinction, because of its long run at #1, of being both the last #1 of the 1900s and the first of the 2000s.  It was also the #2 song of Billboard’s Half-Century Hot 100 in 2008.

So what I’m saying is, this is one huge hit for Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas.

Thomas, and his Matchbox Twenty team, created this song as a demo for Santana, not originally thinking that Thomas would do the final version.  Unsurprisingly, Thomas took the inspiration from his Latina wife, Marisol.

I can’t find any reference as to whose idea it was to load Supernatural up with so many featured guests… but I hope Carlos Santana gave them a huge bonus… because the album was the biggest of Santana’s career.  It went 15x Platinum and won 9 Grammy Awards.

Currently, Thomas and Matchbox Twenty are readying an Australian tour to support their September 2012 album, North.  Santana is doing a brief tour of India before heading back to his residency at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay in November.

Tomorrow, another visit from the Gloved One.

Other songs that reached #1 on October 23:
1961 –
“Runaround Sue” by Dion (his first, 2 weeks)
1976 – “If You Leave Me Now” by Chicago (their first, 2 weeks)
