Day 299: Womanizer

Song: “Womanizer” by Britney Spears
Reached #1: October 25, 2008 (her second, 1 week)
Previously: Day 30

Womanizer or Stalkerizer?

When Britney Spears hit the top of the charts with “…Baby One More Time” in 1999, it looked to be the first of many, many #1 hits.

So what happened?  Her second #1 came 9 years later, with the sort-of followup to “Toxic”.  “Womanizer” came from her sixth album – there was a lot of music between the #1 hits.  Makes you wonder if public instability is a good sales tactic after all…

…and I think we’ve only touched the surface.  I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Vegas casinos taking action on when Britney will melt down live on X-Factor.  She’s shown occasional signs of the Big One during the audition process… now, with no filter… this could become very, very interesting…

“Womanizer” was one of the big beneficiaries of changes in Billboard’s chart methodology.  On October 18, 2008, it entered the Hot 100 at #96.  One week later (and after a ton of digital downloads), it went to #1.  For a while, that 95-spot jump to #1 was the record (until Kelly Clarkson did her one better with “My Life Would Suck Without You”).

Britney’s currently at 4 #1 hits (with “3” and “Hold It Against Me” completing the list).  Will there be more?  I guess that’s the biggest X Factor of all…

Tomorrow, for day 300, a signature song from an artist we lost too soon…

Other songs that reached #1 on October 25:
1980 –
“Woman In Love” by Barbra Streisand (her fourth, 3 weeks)
1986 – “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper (her second, 2 weeks)
