Song: “Romantic” by Karyn White
Reached #1: November 2, 1991 (her first, 1 week)
She should have been a superstar – at least, you’d think so, since her first album was produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface, and her second was produced by the ultra-successful duo of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
She even married Lewis after the second album came out.
So what happened to Karyn White?
She married Terry Lewis after the second album came out. Well, that and they adopted a son and had a daughter.
Karyn White decided that motherhood was more important than her music career, and left the music business when her Warner Brothers contract ran out in 1999.
Of course, it also might have had to do with the fact that her music just stopped selling. “Romantic” was her first #1 and fourth Top 10 pop hit. Her next single, “The Way I Feel About You”, went only to #12. She wouldn’t crack the Top 50 again.
In 2006, she attempted a comeback, but the album was scrapped. She’s trying again this year with a new album called Carpe Diem. The first single is the song that would have been the title track of the 2006 album, “Sista, Sista”.
Tomorrow, a rapper who may or may not have borrowed his most famous riff from Queen.
