Song: “How Do You Talk To An Angel” by the Heights
Reached #1: November 14, 1992 (their first, 2 weeks)
There’s been a history of made-for-TV bands going to #1… from the fully-fictional Archies to the semi-fictional Monkees (at least at the start, someone else was doing the music).
But The Heights were different – they claimed that the actors were really playing the characters’ instruments from the start, and nobody has ever proven otherwise.
There was a bit of unreality in the show – I mean, if the clip is what it appears to be, it’s highly unlikely that a band could jump in and do a studio-quality version of a song 30 seconds after the singer/songwriter pitches it… but hey, it was FOX’s classic ‘90s-style teen escapism, let them have their conceits.
Charlotte Ross would, of course, go on to be the unlikely love interest for Dennis Franz on NYPD Blue. Jamie Walters went on to 90210 before trying to launch a singing career. The rest of the cast have gone on to various levels of obscurity, sadly.
We’re probably due for another attempt at the “creation of a rock band” drama… so who knows, another fictional band could cross over into real life soon…
Tomorrow, the pop singer who later became a country legend…
