Song: “Run It!” by Chris Brown feat. Juelz Santana
Reached #1: November 26, 2005 (his first, 5 weeks)
When this song came out in 2005, Chris Brown was a 16-year-old kid from the mean streets of Tappahannock, Virginia. He’d been discovered at age 13, signed to Def Jam by 14, and got his first #1 hit 6 months after turning 16. He was one of a small group of artists who hit #1 with their first single.
Of course, the defining moment of Brown’s career had nothing to do with music – directly.
It was his beating of Rihanna in February 2009.
He’s said he doesn’t remember it, but he does, but it’s a blur.
He’s said that he and Rihanna broke up “as friends”, despite the restraining order.
In 2011, he trashed a dressing room at ABC Times Square because he was tired of talking about it – even though it’s going to haunt him for the rest of his life.
Of course, we have to remember he’s just 23. And he’s grown up with the spotlight on him. Which only means that he’d probably have done the same stupid stuff anyway, but without the publicity.
And it’s not just Rihanna. He’s had the off-and-on relationship with Karreuche Tran. And a few months ago, the glass-bottle-throwing bar fight with Drake that caught NBA star Tony Parker in the crossfire (and with glass in his eye, almost ending his career).
The reality is, Chris Brown appears to be a kid with anger issues. Let’s hope he figures them out before the headlines get a lot worse.
Tomorrow, the first solo #1 hit for the lead singer of an iconic R&B group.
