Song: “No One” by Alicia Keys
Reached #1: December 1, 2007 (her second, 5 weeks)
Would she have had the same career had she gone with her original choice of stage name?
For that matter, you can kind of wonder why she didn’t just stick with Alicia Cook… that seems a good enough name for the entertainment business, right?
She wanted to go with Alicia Wilde. Her manager, though, said that the right name came to him in a dream – and since Alicia was a prolific pianist… Alicia Keys it was.
It’s kind of hard to believe she’s been performing for over 25 years – but it’s true. Her first appearance was at age 4, as an extra on The Cosby Show. Her debut album (and her first #1) arrived when she was 20. That single, “Fallin’”, won multiple Grammy awards and served notice on the industry that Alicia Keys was going to be around for a while.
In reality, she didn’t go 6 years between #1 hits – she was featured on Usher’s 2004 #1, “My Boo” – but it’s not like she went away between her two #1 hits… OK, she did go away for a few weeks in 2006 due to family pressures, but other than that… she did have three other Top 10 hits in that time span.
She hasn’t placed a lot of singles in the Top 20 since then, but her first five albums all reached #1 or #2 on the Billboard Top 200, so clearly, she’s doing OK.
Most recently, of course, she’s taken on another full-time gig – motherhood – which is why you’ll occasionally see pictures of her at a concert holding a small child…
Tomorrow brings the biggest #1 hit ever (to date)…
