Song: “Baby I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley (Freebaby)” by Will To Power
Reached #1: December 3, 1988 (their first, 1 week)
Will To Power is an intermittent project of a Miami-based producer who took the “group’s” name from the Nietzchean concept that we all have a fundamental desire to achieve power.
Bob Rosenberg’s will to power led to three albums, one #1 hit, another top 10 hit, and an asterisked spot on every One-Hit Wonder list (asterisked because of that other top 10, a cover of 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” that nobody remembers today).
The only constant, of course, has been Rosenberg. Each album had a different female lead vocalist (or, on the most recent album, multiple leads). The musicians have also changed regularly. And it’s not really clear if Will To Power still exists, with the last known release in 2006 (and that was a remix of the last album from 2004) – although the fact that Rosenberg maintains an active Facebook presence for both the band and himself indicates that… well, something might still happen.
“Freebaby” was also the last gasp of the medley – 24 years later, it’s still the last medley to hit the top of the charts. I suspect it will remain so for a long time to come.
The group should not be confused with IndyCar racer Will Power, or with that thing that everyone who’s ever been on a diet loses…
Tomorrow, we ask the question, “If you quote the Bible, does God get a writing credit?”
