Song: “I’m Your Angel” by R. Kelly & Celine Dion
Reached #1: December 5, 1998 (R.Kelly’s second, 3 weeks)
Credit for a duet like this one is tricky… the source I’m using for chart positions generally gives one artist the credit for a duet. They’ve decided this was an R. Kelly song with Céline Dion as featured artist… but the song was released on both singers’ then-current albums. As Kelly wrote and produced the song, he gets the credit.
If you give Dion credit as well, this is her fourth – and to date, last – US #1 single. In fact, after this song, she only had one more Top 10 single… and hasn’t been above the Top 20 in the 21st Century. Of course, she does well in French Canada and tours often, so it’s not like she’s hurting for money…
Both artists come off as a bit… odd.
Kelly is still rolling out “chapters” of his “hip-hopera” Trapped In The Closet – chapters 23-40 came out in November 2012, and there may still be more. He has only the two pop #1 hits, but has owned the R&B world (as a singer and producer).
Dion, well… she’s Céline Dion. She married her 25-years-older manager (who, lest we forget, had started working with her when she was 12 and he wasn’t). She’s a loopy interview, probably in part because English isn’t her first language.
Tomorrow, a band that technically didn’t exist until after their first single was released… and that single went to #1.
Other songs that reached #1 on December 5:
1964 – “Ringo” by Lorne Greene (his first, 1 week)
1987 – “Heaven Is A Place On Earth” by Belinda Carlisle (her first, 1 week)
