Day 350: U Got It Bad

Song: “U Got It Bad” by Usher
Reached #1: December 15, 2001 (his third, 6 weeks)
Previously: Day 45

He got it bad…

“U Got It Bad” came out of the studio sessions for Usher’s 8701 album (when it was titled All About U).   The song was written by Jermaine Dupri in one night, as an expression of Dupri’s aggravation at Usher’s inattention during a session.

Usher had brought a lady friend to the session, and was clearly more focused on her than on singing.  Dupri finally got fed up, had an argument with Usher, and finally got the lady to leave.  But it wasn’t long before Usher was on the phone with her, at which point Dupri finally lost it and told Usher that the session was over, telling him that Usher “got it too bad” over the girl.

After Usher left, Dupri started writing, and has said he knew the song was going to be a hit as soon as he got it on paper.

The song wasn’t supposed to be released as a single at all, or in the sequence it did, depending on the source… but Usher pushed for it, telling interviewers that this song was “what an Usher record is”.

“U Got It Bad” was one of those split #1s – and one week from today, we’ll see the first-time #1 from an infamous Canadian band that broke up Usher’s 3-week run.  Tomorrow, an old-school ode to infidelity.
